The Next Revolution in Washing Machines

For decades Europeans’ and North-Americans’ have done many things differently. However, perhaps one of the most marked differences is in how each population takes on the daily task of "doing the laundry".

In the 1950’s, energy requirements and the lack of availability of natural resources (I.e. water) forced Europe to search for a less wastfull technology for washing clothes. Their answer was the front-loading, revolving drum washing system. This system in the years to come would prove not only far more water and energy efficient, but also far greater in washing performance.

Times have changed in North America as well. In recent years, our abundant supplies of water and hydro electricity have come under pressure from high-usage. Now, North America is being forced to look towards more efficient ways to run our homes. Skyrocketing hydro and natural gas energy rates now make efficient washing machines a very attractive proposition. Often saving their new owners enough in water and energy costs to pay for themselves in a few short years.

Please see below for a short tour of just some of the advantages of front-load laundry. We would be pleased to spend time with you personally in our store where we have front-loader’s from Europe and North America running "Live".

Water Savings:

Front load washing machines will typically use one-third the water of an average top load machine. For European front loaders, this water saving translates to 100 Liters of saved water per load. If you washed three times per week, this would translate to 15,600 Liters / Yr. in savings!!

Energy Savings:
There is one common misconception regarding energy savings. Often it is assumed that the electric motor uses the most energy in washing. Actually, the energy needed to heat the water for the machine to run is the largest consumer (of natural gas or electricity, depending upon your style of water heater). Therefore, the major water savings above means major energy savings to heat that water. Conservative estimates place water/energy savings per year at around $100 Cnd. (savings is the difference between using a typical front load versus a typical top load washing machine). Your payback period for the extra investment into a front load machine is usually between five and ten years!

Washing Performance:
Front load washing machines do not use an agitator. Agitators are the most common contributor towards clothing wear in a washing machine. Rather than "jerking" the clothing back and fourth with an agitator, the drum and laddles rotates and counter rotates to"dip the clothes" in and out of the water. Serving to be much gentler, this system also offers superior stain and soil removal over traditional washing machines. Not only do they use much less water; front load washing machines also remove more water from the clothes. Spinning at up to 1600 RPM, front loaders will remove upto 50% more moisture from the clothes. The fastest top loaders spin at 600 RPM. This allows your dryer to work more efficiently as well.

Easy on Clothes:
The gentle washing system and almost infinitly adjustable rotation speeds allows front loaders to wash clothing that we would never have washed in a machine. Woolen modes and silkens modes on some machines will reduce that already high dry-cleaning bill. In fact, many commercial dry cleaning operations are moving towards commercial versions of front loaders due to effiency and less harmful chemicals.

Worlds Best Detergents:
Front load washing machines use a fraction of the detergent of a top load machine. As well, front loaders use "low sudsing/low phosphate" detergent. Known as High-Effiencey washing machine soap, major soap brands in North America now supply this soap in Canadian and American supermarkets. These brands include; Tide, Sunlight, Arm & Hammer. European front loaders use specialized detergents that work in much the same fashion (except with some added benefits). Nickerson’s is pleased to supply both Persil and Dali brands of detergent for European front load washing machines.
